About This Boat

This Nautitech 475 is a blank canvas.  She was designed in an era when seakeeping was a paramount design consideration and the industry hadn't quite pivoted towards charter cats.  As a result she has long lean hulls that are easily driven.  She has a high bridgedeck clearance and a sleek coachroof for low windage.  Her rig is big and powerful.  Her engines have low hours (less than 800).  She is a cat for crossing oceans.  She was launched in 1996 and spent her early years in French Polynesia and then Hawaii.  When she got to Oregon, water was discovered in her core below the waterline.  That is one drawback of an old-school design - older production methods and standards.  Still, she is a great platform and her Seller set about putting her right.  He laid everything bare, investigated all of her flaws, and utilized modern methods and materials to repair and strengthen her with some modifications as he intended her to be a semi-custom cruising cat for a retirement at sea.  He has transformed her in the process and she is now a strong and beautifully refinished set of hulls waiting to be reunited with her engines, systems, hardware, and rigging. 

Unfortunately the Seller's time for the project has come to an end.  He wants to sell.  So now she's a blank canvas.  A great substrate for a builder/cruiser with the ability to finish her.  She will need an interior.  She will need systems reinstalled.  She will need all components re-integrated and some renewed, but she is close enough to taste the sea.  Everything removed is right there with her awaiting prudent reuse.  You can choose her interior look and feel.  Choose your materials and surfaces.  You can setup the electrical & plumbing system to meet your exact needs.  You can arrange your own galley.  You can put in your choice of electronics.  This is an chance to get exactly what you want in your cruising catamaran and to really know your boat from the inside out as you finish her refit.  Please read the description below where you will find her Seller's account of her refit experience thus far.  This is a project catamaran no doubt, but she's an opportunity too!

Purchased in Hawaii in 2008 and sailed her back to the Pacific Northwest.

In 2009 I put the vessel ashore for a full refit, to be performed by me.

 

At this time, this vessel is a completed bare hull, on the hard, that will need systems reinstalled. The difficult structural work has been completed. All work completed, and the work still needing to be done, is detailed below. Most of the original equipment is available for re-installation (engines, winches, tracks, toe rails, stanchions, etc.).

 

Some of the attractive characteristics of this catamaran:

· Sleek lines;

· Large interior volume, storage, and load capacity;

· Long waterline;

· Simple interior and easy access to all areas of the boat (no liners);

· Easy passage from the cockpit to deck.

Two (2) Volvo D2-55 engines (approximately 700 hours).

 

A highly regarded marine surveyor has taken notes throughout this refit and is available to independently verify the work that has been performed.

 

 

Work already Performed

 

Any modifications or repairs have been made with Gougeon Brothers epoxy products (Gougeon makes West System and Proset products). All plywood used was Hydrotek BS-1088 marine grade. All paint products are Awlgrip. Many parts and steps involving epoxy resin and fiberglass were carried out using a process called vacuum resin infusion. This technique is superior to hand layup, in that resin usage is minimized and fiberglass wet-out is maximized, yielding a lighter, stronger product, with better cosmetics.

Most areas of the boat were manufactured with PVC foam core and polyester resin skins.

This makes light, strong, stiff panels. The foam core is what is known as GS, or Grid Score, in small blocks that allow the core to conform to compound curves. One challenge with this core material is that the grooves in the foam core provide a migration path for water that may find its way through the fiberglass skin, into the core. However, in all cases I made sure the core material was thoroughly dry before doing any work on cored areas of the boat.

 

Exterior Work Completed

 

· Peel gelcoat below waterline;

· Infuse hull core grid scores with resin to fill grooves in core to insure no water could enter the core in the future;

· After filling the hull core with resin, I applied two layers of fiberglass cloth to the entire underwater area of the hull in quad-axial configuration (combination of 0/90 and +45/-45 glass cloth) for a total laminate weight of 41 oz. per sq. yd. (except 58 oz. at the bow and stern for extra reinforcement), doing this with vacuum resin infusion for a very clean, smooth, highly reliable result;

· After applying new epoxy hull skins, I applied three coats of West system barrier coat, and four coats of Interlux Interprotect 2000E barrier coat;

· Remove keels from boat (non-destructive process) repair keel shoes, substantially reinforce with additional fiberglass, and reinstall using resin infusion process;

· Due to leakage under cabin top (where adhesively bonded to deck), remove cabin top, and dry out, reinstall cabin top (adding 2" curb under cabin top to gain additional headroom in salon);

· Modify cabin top at mast area to provide more working room and step to cabin top;

· Repair a structural problem to the mast step area. This is now a very robust area. Also added a 2” thick G-10 base for the mast step shoe to keep the boom the same height above the cabin top after raising that 2”;

· Make more ergonomic stern steps, and change transom shape to provide larger bottom platform. This added 6” to the boat, making it an even 48 feet;

· Reinforce bow crossbeam (metal spar) anchor points internally and externally;

· Fill and tape hull / deck joint seam that is not covered by toe rail to make watertight;

· Reconfigure helm stations and add step from deck area down to cockpit;

· Add platform across stern of boat (added as a strengthening element, but could have other uses, such as storage, diving platform, etc.);

· Redo cockpit sole;

· Cleanup cockpit lockers (New plywood backs, re-tab as needed, sand);

· The exterior has been faired, and painted with Awlgrip two part linear polyurethane;

· Install new Tides Marine rudder bearings;

· New rudders have been made for the boat. The rudder stocks are machined from Super Duplex 255 stainless steel (trade name Ferralium®). This grade is fully twice as strong and twice as corrosion resistant as grade 316 stainless steel. The shells are 3 layers of triax, totaling 102 oz. The core is Proset expanding epoxy foam at 15 pounds per square inch. These are very robust rudders.

 

Interior Work Completed

 

· Make and install new primary Salon bulkhead; 

· Repair bulkheads as needed (replacing any unsound material);

· Throughout the boat, repair bulkhead tabbing as needed (remove bad and re-tab);

· Remove all tabbing for floors in bilge and redo with epoxy / glass;

· Cut new limber holes in bilge floors making sure to completely isolate plywood;

· In forward most area of center structure (nacelle), remove all compromised core and inner skin, bond new 2” foam core and inner FRP skin, and replace longitudinal frames that make up the anchor locker and forward storage lockers;

· Repair stringers as needed, add floor stringers where not originally installed;

· Repair deck hatch openings as needed (port aft, and two in salon cabin top);

· Repair all hatch covers as needed (six total);

· Redo salon sole to flat and sound;

· Make and install engine compartment hatch gutter drains;

· Sand, epoxy coat, and sand all plywood, as well as timber beams;

· Structural beams were original adhesively bonded. I added FRP tabbing to back this up for long-term durability;

· Completely fair interior with epoxy fairing compound;

· Prime and paint interior.

 

 

Work needed to complete the refit:

 

· Paint salon area;

· Paint non-living areas as desired (bilges; lockers, etc.);

· Install Volvo D2-55 engines, sail drives, fuel tanks, and engine controls;

· Connect steering gear;

· Install hatches and ports;

· Install salon window and door;

· Install four large, fixed windows;

· Install deck hardware (toe rail, winches, stanchions, cleats, etc.);

· Install a plumbing system, including pumps and through-hulls;

· Install and electrical system;

· Build out amenities as desired (galley, head, cabins, bunks, storage, etc.);

· Install electronics as desired (original available);

· Apply bottom paint;

· Step mast - Z-Spar Mast and Boom (Mast has  1X19 standing rigging).

 

In many cases, the choice to installing original equipment or new equipment will be discretionary.  In some cases, original will no longer fit, due to modifications to the boat. For example, new dingy davits would be needed, due to the newly added stern platform.

Most of the original equipment is available for re-installation (engines, winches, tracks, toe rails, stanchions, etc.).
