Dean Catamarans First to be Accredited by SABBC

SABBC

Dean 441

Jag 550

Peter Dean, President of Dean Catamarans, South Africa, announced on May 10th that his company was one of the first two awarded accreditation by the South African Boatbuilders Business Council. The only other South African catamaran builder to obtain this certification was Robertson & Caine.  Beginning in December, 2007, only accredited manufacturers will be permitted to exhibit at an International level. Dean builds the popular Dean 441 sailing catamaran and the strikingly sleek JAG Powercat.

Dean Catamarans upholds the fine tradition of being catamaran building over-achievers. It all began in 1984, when the company was founded by Peter Dean, Sr. They were the first company to start production catamarans in South Africa; the first South African yacht manufacturer to receive ISO 9002 accreditation; and the first to receive CE certification. They are also the only South African boat yard to design and build their own product from start to finish.

Dean Catamarans is South Africa’s largest and oldest yacht manufacturer still under original ownership. Peter Dean, Jr. is now at the helm and takes great pride in his work. This is reflected in the company’s strong business ethics, fair pricing, warranty, production, and the personal relationships maintained with clients. To date they have built 285 sailing catamarans.

New Catana 50 Meets the Press in Canet, France

This past June, Catana Catamarans hosted a three day media exposition to introduce the new Catana 50. While the new 50 was first shown at the Paris Boat Show last December, she was carted off to the Düsseldorf Boat Show before arriving back at the factory in the South of France. While everyone was impressed with the new design, what did she sail like?  Did designer Christophe Barreau truly design a next generation Catana that would sail as well as she looked? Judging by the reaction of the press, Barreau hit the jackpot, because a wide array of glowing new reviews will be arriving in the yachting press in the next few months. But, as I always like to say, the best way to see how a boat sails is to take her for a sail. To this end we invite serious buyers to visit the Catana factory for a test sail, or to come to the Annapolis Boat Show this coming October to test sail the new Catana 50.  In the meantime, the best we can offer are photos of this lovely new catamaran under sail.

The New 2008 Dolphin 460

Sailing

Junior Pimenta, the builder of Dolphin Catamarans, has attended the Annapolis and Miami Boat Shows now for the past four years and has seen his brand grow with alacrity. To date, he has launched 25 new Dolphin 460s to rave reviews. What he noticed at the boat shows, along with Phillip Berman from The Multihull Company, was that many men over six feet, four inches tall, did not have enough headroom in the galley to stand over the stove or sink without bumping their heads. It became clear to Junior and Phil that Dolphin was losing sales to competitors who offered greater headroom for taller buyers. As such, Dolphin has redesigned the 460 and raised the entire couch roof of the salon and the hulls 4 inches, so that the main salon now offers over 6’ 8” of headroom.

LONG RANGER was designed for LONG RANGING under power or sail. She was also designed to carry large groups, long distances, for the purpose of inter-action in coastal and shallow area's. She is perhaps the most shallow-drafted yacht of her size in the world with the capacity to circumnavigate with a large number of people onboard.
1996 89' Custom Trimaran $2,999,995

2003 32' PDQ $179,900
“Varekai” is a very lightly used and well-equipped example of the high quality PDQ 32 Altair Classic cruising catamaran. She was the last PDQ 32 built. “Varekai” was delivered in September, 2003 and has been sailed for only two summer seasons exclusively in the fresh waters of Lake Erie. She has been winterized and stored ashore under shrink wrap each winter, so her environmental exposure has been minimal.

This is a BRAND NEW YACHT. It recently arrived by ship in Ft. Lauderdale where it was commissioned by its owners. The new, powerful 30 HP VOLVO saildrives have 12 hours on them and the HONDA generator has just under 5 hours. The owners wish to upgrade to a larger catamaran. This is a bluewater cat that offers outstanding volume and comfort for its size class thanks to a 22 foot beam.
2007 36' Jaguar $330,000

This impeccable Catana 471 owner's version is turn key and ready to go cruising. She offers all of the innovations of this award winning design (1999 Multihull of the year) with an impressive list of upgrades including carbon mast, crossbeam, martingale and bowsprit. A full suit of sails by INCIDENCE includes Spectra triradial mainsail, solent and gennaker and two symmetrical spinnakers. This yacht was outfitted by an experienced blue water cruising family that used her to complete an "Atlantic loop" and demanded only the best in performance, versatility and safety.
2002 47' Catana $649,000

1983 42' Custom Shuttleworth $125,000
"Damiana" is an offshore-capable racing/cruising trimaran designed by the well known British designer John Shuttleworth and built in the UK by Reppy Marine under the supervision of the designer. The hull structure is built of unidirectional glass fiber and Kevlar with an Airex foam core. The crossbeams are a composite of unidirectional glass and carbon fiber. The amas (floats) and crossbeams are each divided into 3 x water-tight sections. The forward crossbeam is an undisturbed structure passing through the main hull and extending down to the bottom of each ama.

I have sold several Catana 431's over the years and I can tell you this is a very popular yacht for those who have had the privilege to sail one. It is small enough to be handled by a couple, easy to reef and dock, yet large enough to handle big seas and turn nice speeds in most conditions under both sail and power. She has good bridge deck clearance, so she seldom slaps or pounds, a powerful rig to push her along in light breezes, dual daggerboards that enable her to point smartly, and properly vacuum bagged hulls with Klegecelle cores and kevlar lining.
1999 43' Catana $430,000
