Catana Launches the First New Catana 50 for
American Owners Jim and Adean Bridges

Jim and Adean Bridges     I am flying back from Barcelona after a lovely week spent in Valencia, Spain, for the America’s Cup finals which were the closest and most exciting match races I have ever experienced. I was honored to serve as a commentator of the event with Sir James Hardy, a most gracious and humorous Australian who skippered Gretel II in the challenge against Bill Ficker and the cup defender of 1967, INTREPID. As sailing advisor to John Bertrand and Alan Bond aboard Australia II he helped bring the cup down under in 1983.

After the Cup races, I headed North to Canet-en-Roussillon, on the French/Spanish border, home of Catana catamarans. Here Factorywe launched and sea trialed the first new Catana 50 for American buyers Jim and Adean Bridges. Jadimean, as she is called, will soon head across the Atlantic where we will proudly show her at the Annapolis Boat Show this coming October. Wow, what a lovely boat!  The new Catana 50 represents the combined fruit of feedback from Catana owners over the past 20 years – it is well thought out in every respect and represents, I believe, a true breakthrough in luxury performance cruising catamarans. We are truly excited to introduce this fine new Catana model at Annapolis this fall.

Hull     The great success of the new Catana 50 was evident at the humming factory, which had five new boats in the finishing bays and two additional hulls in the lay-up bays. In addition, Catana has ventured into the business of building semi-custom mega-cats which range in size from 70 to 95 feet. During my visit, I inspected the first new Catana 87, being built for South African client. He purchased a Catana 582 in 2002 and voyaged on her for several years before coming back full circle to the Catana factory in Canet, France. We sold "Safari" to a German buyer who is himself sailing around the world. A few months later Ivor decided he could not live without the sea in his life. So he set Transomout to create a dream cat large enough for his entire family, including his many grandkids. He felt confident Catana’s design and build team would be able to realize his vision. We will publish launch pictures in September of this first ever double-decker Catana.

For those who feel the 87 footer is a bit too big and the new 50 a bit too small, Catana continues to build the Catana 52, Catana 58, and is now tooled up to build the new Catana 65. At the time of my visit, three of the new Catana 65’s were under construction.

LONG RANGER was designed for LONG RANGING under power or sail. She was also designed to carry large groups, long distances, for the purpose of inter-action in coastal and shallow areas. The Lite 62 trimaran is a very high performance cruising trimaran designed specifically to make fast and comfortable offshore passages. Wetted surface has been optimized for outstanding light air performance. She was designed by Kurt Hughes and Robert Perry. The owner of this Broadblue 46 owned two large catamarans, one for use in the Meditteranean, the other for the Caribbean. He simply wasn't using this new boat nearly enough and has decided to sell. She has just 150 hours on her twin diesels so she is, for all purposes, a new yacht and shows as such.

This Grainger is a very attractive and well proven performance cruising catamaran. She was designed by the respected Australian designer, Tony Grainger, and finely built in the Pacific Northwest by Little Hoquiam Boat Yard/Howard Moe Enterprises.
