Shining Time is an Outremer 55 light equipped for super high performance voyaging. She carries the latest high-tech sails, is set up with solar and efficient refrigeration, and sails at amazing speeds. She can regularly pull 240 to 260 mile days under sail. In other words, with good weather routing Shining Time can avoid or outrun just about any violent weather. And like all Outremer's she is built like a rock, with solid fiberglass hulls. She was honored in 2000 as the Cruising World "Best Cruising Multihull."
Shining Time was first purchased by an American couple in 2002. They sailed her extensively for several years in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Around 2005 they experienced a forestay failure off the U.S. East Coast and the mast came down. But Shining Time's hull and deck obtained no damage at all in the incident. The rig was cut away, they motored to shore, and that was that.
Shining Time was totally refitted less than a year ago - she was given an entire new Z-Spar mast, new standing rigging, and the finest cruising laminate sails you can purchase today - Hydranet radial main and jib by Quantum, which cost nearly $25,000. The new mast, standing rigging, running rigging and sails cost close to $60,000.
In addition to her new sails and rig, Shining Time has a Spectra Santa Cruz watermaker, several solar panels, Webasto heating system, a large new dacron screecher, a 2002 Quantum asymmetrical spinnaker in great condition, Isotherm refrigerator and freezer, several anchors, oversize Lofrans windlass, Wilhelm autopilot with remote, Prosine Inverter, 2008 Raymarine 48 mile radar, Dell C 640 laptop with Nobeltek Charts for entire U.S. East Coast and Caribbean, and 2008 Walker Bay hardbottom 11 foot tender and 15 HP outboard.
Shining time has very low hours on her twin 37.5 HP Nanni diesels, in the range of about 1,500. She is set up with large queen berths aft, central heads, and two large centrally located showers in each hull. Forward in each hull are v-berths which can be set up as singles, or arranged for "over and under bunkbeds."
Shining Time is set up for those who intend to do long passages in comfort and with enormous speed. With her new rig and sails, low engine hours, solar, and the gear she has, she is a perfectly turn-key voyaging catamaran for the serious sailing enthusiast.
