About the Captain Jeff Bowen
Jeff Bowen

Captain Jeff Bowen started teaching sailing in 1986 and currently holds a Masters License from the U.S. Coast Guard. His love of the water developed early as he enjoyed surfing in California, Hawaii, the Caribbean and South Africa.

Much of his professional life has been spent working with teen and young adults, providing youth programs, camps and service opportunities in churches and community organizations. Captain Bowen has led relief and mission teams to Guatemala, Mexico, Trinidad and South Africa. Domestically, he has also worked with at-risk young people in the inner cities of Los Angeles, Dallas, New York and Washington, DC. Captain Bowen realized the impact that sailing brings through team building and how the sport develops responsibility and self-confidences. He brought his love of sailing and his heart for inner-city teens together by starting Planet Hope Land and Sea, a non-profit sailing adventure organization that focuses on teens from Washington, DC. The sailing school for adults has grown out of this organization. By training instructors and volunteers, the demand for quality sailing instruction in the metro DC area encouraged the beginning of Capitol Sailing School.

Captain Bowen has cruised extensively up and down the US East Coast and in the Bahamas with his wife and five children. His latest adventures were featured in the fall 2005 issue of The American Sailing Journal.
