Here is a super-well maintained, refit Privilege 42, with new and upgraded engines (100 hours, 2 Volvo x 39 HP replacing the original 29 HP) and just ready to go voyaging. I asked the owner to explain for me her care and refit history over the past two years. Here is what he said:

"Tropi Cat has had the best care since I owned it. It has always been in professional marinas or yards and I have the stacks of bills to prove it. One person takes care of running the engines and topping off the batteries, although it does not need much of that, because it uses the solar panels only when not in use. It gets cleaned twice a month by a local guy, and waxed every few months, especially before I get back to her. It is shining and sparkling and ready to sail at a moment’s notice. Of course, because I use it only one month a year, when I go back, I run through all the system before going out. Boats can always be improved and you can always spend more money on it, but for the type of boat it should satisfy any buyer that knows boats.

I bought Tropi Cat in Martinique in 1999. The boat was sound in general conditions, but bare of almost any electronics. During the next 7 years I proceeded to discover that the electric system needed a complete re-design and to add all that the boat needed in missing essentials.

Here is a list of things done to it in somewhat of a progressive order:

2000 – St Maarten.
Added following:
Raytheon Radar
Raytheon Chart Plotter
Autohelm auto pilot
Raytheon GPS
All of the above communicate and interact together. I also added a serial connection to plug a computer into the GPS at the nav station
Standard VHF radio with remote station at helm
Icom 710 SSB Radio
New Balmar 120 amp high output alternator
2002 – Trinidad
New Main sail and stack pack
Tried to fix freezer, but local people could not swing it.

2003
Sailed through Venezuela, Colombia, ABC islands, to Panama.
No major upgrades because of unavailable service.

2006 - Roatan - Belize - Rio Dulce, Guatemala
Rio Dulce provides many services and ease of shipping from the USA.
Bought and installed new Volvo engines (Upgraded from 29 HP to 39HP)
Changed both engine instrument panels to key operated ones.
Changed both propeller to improve speed.
Re-designed and completely upgraded electric system.
Added many fuses, isolating switches between battery banks.
Added batteries to house bank, and battery monitoring system.
Added solar panels, and integrated with the boat electric system
Hauled boat out and pulled rudders down to inspect and clean posts.
Changed all steering cables.
Changed kitchen stove with new three fires range
Completely re-insulated main refrigerator with expanding foam, because original insulation was not up to the job. This was a bigger than it sounds. Now the refrigerator does not run constantly and has much increased efficiency. Because the ice can keep for a week in it, we gave up doing the same job on the freezer, which we currently use for storage.

Made new trampolines and bought new cockpit cushions.
Had hatch and helm covers made.
Serviced Windlass and all toilets.
Bought new spare alternators
Changed original Instrument displays from ST50 Autohelm series to ST60. These instruments are a Tri Data and a Wind indicator.
Changed display of chart plotter to color unit.
Bought and installed new battery charger and all new batteries of same type, size and brand.

Changed most interior lights with new led based type. Customized lighting to our needs.
Re-upholstered salon’s settees.
Bought all new sheets, pillows, towels for al cabins in 2005.
