Cats On The Baja Haha

In the 2009 Baja Haha, multihulls checked in together as the "No Comprende" division. I don't understand either so I guess I fit right in. Poobah, Richard Spindler's 63' catamaran Profligate, shepherded a fleet of 165 vessels from San Diego to Cabo. And shepherd she did as there was some spectacular - some might even say sublime - sailing and a very eventful trip. The fleet saw light air and fog, heavy air with big following seas, and perfect breezes under moonlit skies. We even had a sinking to add drama to the radio nets and we certainly enjoyed a whole lot of howling at the moon.In addition.....

Courage to Voyage

This is the continuing story of a 28 foot cat sailing down the west coast of the USA to Mexico. Some may think this trip should be a breeze. We think courage is essential to voyaging and exploring. Life consists of a million small acts of courage. From our first foray into kindergarten to sitting with your mother as her body shuts down, each one of us has to draw on our own reservoir of courage to do what must be done to live life happily and peacefully. We do not often think of it as courage: we just pull something up from within; square our shoulders, take a deep breath, and c.....

Cruisin' the Left Coast

2008 swings into boat show season and I look forward to standing on the docks in Miami surrounded by catamarans in great concentration. Like most multihull enthusiasts, I will be like a kid in a candy store. But fresh in my mind are the year's experiences with the much more elusive cats of the Northwest Coast enjoying our truly amazing cruising grounds. The Maine Cat 30' Jasmine was the first to claw her way up the coast from San Diego to Bellingham, WA – in January no less. In the experienced hands of a professional delivery skipper she slipped in behind the lows and motor saile.....

Lessons Learned From A Free Spirit

Over the years I have sold a fare share of catamarans to a wide range of people.  They all start with a vision of where they will go on their boats, and what they will do, but never really know for sure who will take to the cruising lifestyle and who won't.  Some tell me they just want to sail in the Caribbean, but end up circumnavigating.  Others tell me they plan to circumnavigate but never go much beyond the Bahamas, etc. Four years ago I sold a new Dolphin 460 catamaran to Russell Eddington, a former Hobie cat racer I have known since my teens. Russell has sailed his Dolphi.....

Power in Your Palm

Well, it finally happened.  Apple just delivered its one-billionth application download from the App Store, which currently features over 25,000 apps (35,000 by one estimate) built by thousands of developers.  The significance of the milestone (besides just the one billion mark) is that it’s taken only nine months from when the App Store launched on iTunes to hit one billion paid and unpaid downloads.  And the good news is that there are a few salty developers out there creating apps (short for applications) just for you and me. Granted, the select.....
